How Dragon Quest Monsters Evolved

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker. Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2. A Joker Review! A video for you. Today on Questrospective, we're going to break down the majority of the Joker sub-series and talk about how it's contributions helped evolve the Dragon Quest Monsters formula. What you might not know is: Joker is basically the blueprint for modern Monsters- and even a little bit of mainline Dragon Que...
Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth Has A Confusing Message

It's not an April Fool's Joke! It's time to take a look at Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth in our ongoing Like A Dragon video series! Will GC Vazquez finally enjoy his time in RGG Studio's clutches once again? Or will he lament the ongoing spiral of mediocrity this series is spinning in? Did Tsuyoshi Furuta get his grubby hands on this one, or is Kazunobu Takeuchi's fresh contributions curbing t...

Normally, I skip the entries in a series I’m covering if they aren’t localized in English. I do this because A. I only speak and read English and Spanish, so anything in a different language is a bit hard to get through, B. Fan translations are a lot of work, and not every game is graced with one. And C. I like being consistent; I don’t want to cover one non-localized title and then not cover t...
Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince - The Video You're Looking For

The Dark Prince is the first Dragon Quest Monsters game to come out in the West in over seven years. Does it live up to the expectation of rabid fans everywhere? Will Square Enix ever learn how to market their games again? Can GC Vazquez come up with interesting video descriptions that aren't just copy and pasting his script? The future will know. Kick back, relax, and settle in to a Dragon Que...

But did RGG Studio come out with a certified Like A Dragon banger, or are we facing another lackluster story ala Lost Judgment? Welcome b...

If you’ve been here before you know how this works: For Like A Dragon spin-offs, I try to avoid the thoughtful, storyteller approach in favor of a list of valuable reasons for why you should play them. Ryu Ga Gotoku spin-offs tend to lean more on the side of having a fun romp through a fictional world based on a historic time period, wacky premise, or intellectual property- as opposed to provid...

Recently I wrapped up a playthrough of Mass Effect 1 Legendary Edition. Mass Effect was a formative trilogy of RPGs for me in high school, so I wanted to revisit a perceived classic to reevaluate how I felt about it. Most of it held up! Except all the extremely important parts. Mass Effect in general is…a bit confused. Trying to posture as one thing, and still reinforcing the opposite in the sp...
Replay Value is Nonsense

When I choose a video game to play, I balance a ton of factors against one another until I sift out the misfits, and am left with one matching the time and place I’m looking to play it in. Factors can range from main story length, to genre, to whether or not it’s an indie- you name it. But I’ve noticed I’ve never really cared much for one, particular, popular criteria: Replay Value. I see it me...
A Thirty-Minute Roast of Lost Judgment
Переглядів 8 тис.11 місяців тому
The original Judgment was a flawed if earnest attempt at crossing legal drama with detective mystery. Sure, the mystery was as exciting as waiting in-line at the self check-out of your nearest discount grocery store, and the dialogue was pumped full of more fun facts than a bar owner hosting trivia night to keep the lights on, but it had promise. Takuya Kimura and Shinshu Fuji had great on-scre...
The Greatest Game I've Ever Read

When I was a kid, my parents weren’t the most adamant about giving me new games to play. They were expensive, they were always an argument waiting to happen between my brother and I, and they were annoying to listen to in the living room. So no new releases for me. No old ones either as long as they were still above an arbitrary price point my parents would move the goalposts on in order to fee...

This time, this time we’ve got some ground to cover. If there’s one thing game developers can’t get enough of, it’s packing in an entire other game into one they’re already working on. But before we can...
Kasuga Ichiban Is Like A Dragon's Greatest Hero

Previously, I revisited Dragon Quest because Like A Dragon Seven has been said to be directly inspired by it. I’m hesitant to call Like A Dragon “Like A Dragon Quest” because in truth it borrows much from other RPGs as well. The job system and even unique character classes each party member can take are definitely reminiscent of Dragon Quest. Ichiban’s Hero class is parallel with Dragon Quest 3...

Fun fact: people credit Joker for replacing the breeding system with the synthesis system, in the Japanese version it was actually still called breeding. The weird polarity symbols were just regular gender symbols, it was simply a revamp of breeding rather than something entirely new. It's unknown why the localisation decided to make such a big change. Perhaps they felt the system had changed so much it needed a new name? Or perhaps it was a resistance to the idea of neutral genders being an option? That one seems unlikely to me though, as Pokémon already had genderless legendaries at this point.

Another more funny fact: ever wonder why the heck the series is called Joker? Its cos the Incarnus's final form was originally called Joker in Japanese. No clue why the translators changed it, we now miss out on like.. the entire reason for the title, lol

Couldnt be more inaccurate about elder scrolls. Elder scrolls lore is full of unreliable narratives which are in the world by design. You only get surface level answers if you look surface level. I definitely see you like your lore with more mystery which I think is a great thing to have in stories. Lore should have some factor in the story you want to tell, you want it to mean something. This is why you can world build as much lore as you want but it should only be brought up if its relevant to the story being told. Lore can enhance stories and make worlds feel lived in though. You use a lot of references to video games but I think stories that make great use of lore in books are “the name of the wind”, “A song of ice and fire”, and “lord of the rings” which are some examples of stories enhanced by their extensive lore.

The only DQM game where you can fight more than 3/4 monsters, like the mainline series. Also, I don't get it why SQEX removed the monsters following us off battle after Caravan Heart, It was so cool and immersive to see our monsters walking with us.

They simply didn't get localized. You can't forget something you didn't get. Like it happens with a lot of amazing DS and 3DS games stuck in Japan. I bet in Japan they still remember and play these DQ games. Hope we get a localized remaster collection or something but I doubt it.

If replay value was nonsense, then you wouldn't have people speed running games with high replay value while ignoring games with zero replay value. Donkey Kong Country has replay value. Donkey Kong 64 doesn't. Pretty obvious...

This is well timed. These last few days I've been trying to try Terry's Wonderland, but be it the "-ware" side or "game" side perhaps because of Nintendo's actions lately...I can't seem to find a way to play it in English or the process is too complicated for me. Mysterious Key though is an available option that's working and ready to start. I'm curious if I should just skip Terry's Wonderland and settle for that or get some insight on why it's a struggle to even setup for me otherwise. I don't necessarily want to "spoil" myself on a "better" game, I'd like to get as much value out of the franchise as possible as I've only played 4/7 Entries! As for this video itself you've convinced me that Clashes returning might be the thing that could save Dark Prince's PVP. 💀 (Praying for the alleged content update.)

    • @hannariel

TW3D is so monotone, The random generated areas really didn't work for 3DS. I would skip for Mysterious Keys which is objectively better and better than TDP as well.

GC got me into Dragon Quest and JRPGs in general. Now, it's my favourite genre of gaming. Final Fantasy always seemed imposing, though I was intruiged by the mechanics and storytelling and GC made Dragon Quest seem more manageable. In hindsight, I would actually say that late game Dragon Quest to Final Fantasy are reversed, with Dragon Quest being the harder ones in my opinion, but that's likely due to the more limited resources for newer players to learn boss strategies etc with DQ being less popular in the West comparitively. Anyway, it's great to see a new video from one of my favourite video game essayists out there!

  • @MysticRyokan

I feel like Dragon Quest Monsters 1+2 is especially forgotten so much so that the team that tried a fan translation even forgot about it. Which is unfortunate cause for people in the west we really didn't know what we're missing out on, these are hidden gems. the monsters 3DS games had 3D monsters in an overworld with hundreds of them to collect, years before Pokemon did the same (this coming from a die hard pokemon fan) these games really need more praise and unfortunate it was Akira Toryama's passing that brought the series to my attention

slight hiccup i think for monster 1. The scouting chance in the original was set, after fighting the golem the king would mention some monster would not join no matter how much you feed them.... though i did find some oddities while researching this. some will never but some will if you feed them but only a select few (?)
